7 Mistakes You’re Making with Relationship Boundaries (and How Life Coaching Can Help)

Hey there, beautiful! It's Tamika Shanea' here, your favorite "mompreneur" and "Jill of all trades!" If you’ve been following my journey, you know I’m all about helping women stay "SAFE," "CONFIDENT," and "UNSTOPPABLE." Whether I’m talking about our gorgeous TSC LIPPZ collection or training you in our CERTIFIED AI Consultant courses, everything I do comes back to one "BIG" thing: Empowerment.

But let’s get real for a second. You can have the cutest self-defense keychain and the most "glittery" lip gloss, but if your internal boundaries are a mess, you’re still going to feel unprotected!

In my 20+ years of business experience and my work as a certified life coach, I’ve seen so many women, especially my fellow high-achieving "boss babes", struggle with setting limits that actually stick. We want to be helpful, we want to be loved, and we definitely don't want to be "that person" who causes drama. But honey, "being clear is being kind!"

Here are the 7 biggest mistakes you’re probably making with your relationship boundaries and how we can fix them together through coaching!

1. You Think Boundaries Are "Rules" for Other People

This is the #1 mistake I see! We think a boundary is telling someone else what to do. "You have to stop calling me so late!" or "You need to help more with the kids!"

But guess what? A "TRUE" boundary is actually about your behavior, not theirs. It’s a statement of what YOU will do when a limit is crossed.

The Coaching Fix: Instead of trying to control them, focus on your own "PEACE." Try saying: "If you call me after 9 PM, I won't be answering the phone, but I'll get back to you in the morning!" See the difference? You’re taking your power back!

2. You’re Stuck on the "Apology Tour"

Do you find yourself saying "sorry" before you even state your needs? "I’m so sorry, but I just can’t make it to that dinner tonight..." STOP RIGHT THERE!

When you apologize for your boundaries, you’re basically telling the other person that your needs are a "burden." You don't need to justify your peace of mind!

The Coaching Fix: Remember that "NO" is a complete sentence! In our coaching sessions, we work on building that "inner muscle" so you can stand firm in your decisions without feeling like you’ve done something wrong. You are allowed to have limits!

3. You’re Setting Boundaries While "TRIGGERED"

We’ve all been there. You’re frustrated, you’ve had a long day, and suddenly you explode: "THAT’S IT! I’m never doing another favor for you again!"

Setting boundaries when you’re angry usually leads to ultimatums that you won't actually keep. And when you don't keep them, people stop taking your boundaries seriously.

The Coaching Fix: We use "mindfulness" and "emotional regulation" to help you find your calm first. I always say, "wait until the storm passes before you build the fence!" When you’re calm, your boundaries are much more "POWERFUL."

4. You Expect "Mind-Reading" to Be a Love Language

Oh, I know we all wish our partners, friends, and family could just know what we need. You think, "If they really loved me, they’d know I’m tired and offer to help!"

But honey, even the people who love you most aren't psychics! When you don't use your "WORDS," you end up with a "resentment hangover."

The Coaching Fix: On my podcast, "A Gal from Cleveland," we talk a lot about using your voice. "Vague" boundaries get "vague" results! You have to be specific. Tell them exactly what you need, when you need it, and why it matters to you.

5. Your Boundaries are "BLURRY"

"I need more respect" is a beautiful sentiment, but what does it actually look like in real life? If your boundaries are too broad, nobody knows how to follow them: including you!

The Coaching Fix: We get "GRITTY" with the details. Instead of "I need respect," we try: "I need you to speak to me in a calm tone. If you start yelling, I’m going to step away from this conversation until we can both be cool." Clear boundaries create "HEALTHY" relationships!

6. The "One and Done" Trap

You said it once, so they should remember it forever, right? Wrong! People are creatures of habit. They will test your boundaries: sometimes on purpose, but usually just because they’re used to the "old" you.

If you set a boundary but don't enforce it the second time it's crossed, you’re teaching people that your limits are "optional."

The Coaching Fix: This is where my "Self-Defense" mindset comes in! Just like you carry your safety keychain to protect your body, you need to protect your "SOUL." Consistency is your best defense. We work on the "follow-through" so you can stay consistent even when it feels "uncomfortable."

7. You’re Trying to Do It All "ALONE"

Let’s be real: changing the way you show up in relationships is "HARD" work! It’s scary to change the "status quo," especially if you’ve been a people-pleaser for years. Doing it without support is the fastest way to slip back into old habits.

The Coaching Fix: This is exactly why I’m here! As a certified coach with over 20 years of experience, I’ve helped countless women navigate these exact shifts. Whether we’re chatting in a one-on-one session or you’re joining one of my "VIBRANT" group workshops, you don’t have to do this by yourself!
